Acupuncture
- What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of treatment, originating in China and used for over 3,000 years. There’s even some evidence it may have been used by prehistoric humans. It involves placing very fine needles either where you’re feeling pain, elsewhere in the body, or sometimes both.
- How does acupuncture work?
In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s understood that energy (known as Qi, pronounced “chee”) flows through channels in the body. When you’re healthy, that flow is balanced and steady. Illness or injury can disrupt it—either too much, too little, or blocked. - By placing fine needles into specific points along these channels, acupuncture helps restore that balance and clear blockages, which can ease symptoms, especially pain.
- From a Western medical point of view, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system. This encourages your brain to release natural chemicals like dopamine and serotonin that help reduce pain and stress. It can also help block pain signals being sent around the body.
- Is it safe?
All treatments carry some level of risk, but acupuncture is considered very safe when carried out by a properly trained practitioner using sterile needles. The risks are low, especially compared to many other treatments. Your practitioner has received specific degree level training in acupuncture and is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC).
- What does it feel like?
You may feel a slight pressure on the skin from the guide tube. After that, some people often notice a tingling, warming, heaviness, or a spreading sensation—this is normal and usually a sign the treatment is working. After treatment, some people feel very relaxed, others feel more energised. Either way, it’s a good idea to take it easy afterwards—avoid long drives or anything too strenuous if you can.
- Will it work?
Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief, including things like back and neck pain, arthritis, muscle and joint issues, sports injuries, and both acute and long-term conditions. It can also support headaches and migraines, digestive issues, fertility issues or mental health and emotional issues. A lot of people find it helps even when other treatments haven’t. You don’t need to “believe” in it for it to work—it’s not spiritual.
- The effects tend to build over time, so you may need a few sessions before noticing a meaningful difference and for your body to heal.
